The index for monitoring reforms (iMoRe) returned to a very low level. Progress assessment for October 24 – November 9 is only +0.6 points out of +5 points maximum. Progress was observed only in Ukraine’s monetary sphere and business environment.
Valeriya Hontareva, the Head of the National Bank of Ukraine, has replied to the criticism by MP Serhiy Taruta who accused her in contributing to the collapse of the national currency, the economic decline, and the bankruptcy of numerous banks. According to the VoxCheck analysis, Hontareva speaks the truth in 8 of 14 cases, while the rest of her theses include exaggeration, manipulation and one falsehood. Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman surprised everyone with an initiative to double the minimum wage – up to 3200 UAH – in 2017. It is quite difficult to assess this decision because the minimum wage in Ukraine influences numerous indicators and sectors of the economy. It would be irresponsible to make any conclusions without detailed calculations. The views of modern economists on the idea of minimum wage range from enthusiastic approval to sharp criticism. The recently published e-declarations of Ukrainian top politicians and civil servants have revealed the glaring gap between their official and real earnings. In this light, the decision to block the raise of the MP remuneration in Ukraine might seem justified. However, this country needs qualified and public-spirited individuals to enter the political arena and displace inefficient and corrupt politicians. Ensuring decent salaries for MPs and other politicians could be a step in the right direction.
VoxCheck of the Year. How Much Truth There Is in Serhiy Taruta’s Pamphlet about the Head of Ukraine’s Central Bank
The brochure by the Ukrainian MP Serhiy Taruta “Hontareva. A Threat to the Economic Security of Ukraine” has split politicians and experts into two opposing camps, those who support Taruta and those who support Valeriya Hontareva, the Head of the National Bank of Ukraine. VoxCheck has checked most of the facts from the brochure and has discovered that the data, though mostly correct, are manipulated in almost all occasions. The next VoxCheck edition will focus on checking the arguments made by the opponents of Taruta, Valeriya Hontareva and her deputies.
